The business world is unpredictable, and sometimes it is challenging to prepare for emergencies. During times of uncertainty, the healthcare and space industries must act quickly and stay prepared because lives are on the line. A recent Harvard Business Review article written by space and healthcare leaders (Gotian, Camarda, & Turnbull, 2024) provides insightful approaches that leaders can use to prepare their teams for uncertainty.

TIPS FOR FACING AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE

Reflect on the worst-case scenario: As a team, think about hypothetical crises and construct solutions. Do this by having brainstorming sessions, building scenario maps, and classifying risk based on likelihood. Doing this will prepare the team to face critical situations if they occur, or even take preemptive action to avoid these situations in the first place.

Practice daily habits to prepare for emergencies: Be dedicated and prepare daily by training and applying lessons learned. The authors encourage readers to practice, train, and review standard operating procedures. Intentionally training and practicing leads a team to face critical situations head-on.

Effectively communicate and make an inclusive space: To avoid mishaps, team members must communicate clearly and create an open environment for team members to share. The authors say that building a team with individuals possessing different perspectives and cultural backgrounds is best for reaching optimal solutions.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS FOR ORGANIZATIONS

It is best for organizations to stay ready for potential challenges. Incorporating the guidance shared by healthcare and space professionals can prepare teams to excel during times of uncertainty. Planning for the worst-case scenario, training repetitively, and effectively communicating can alleviate anxiety during a crisis and ultimately make teams more successful.
