Interruptions are a common challenge in the workplace, often disrupting workflow and preventing employees from reaching goals. Research also shows that frequent interruptions are linked to higher stress levels, lower job satisfaction, and a diminished sense of accomplishment. The current article (Körner et al., 2024) explores how interruptions can shape employees’ perceptions of work over the course of the day, and impact stress, job satisfaction, and overall well-being.
WORK INTERRUPTIONS
The researchers conducted two studies using a 10-day daily diary design with two questionnaires per day. In the first study, frequent interruptions were associated with more negative emotions, which in turn lowered job satisfaction by the end of the day. The second study reinforced these findings, revealing that employees perceive frequent interruptions as threats to their work success, rather than minor inconveniences, which drives negative emotional responses.
ORGANIZATIONAL TAKEAWAYS
These findings highlight how frequent work interruptions can negatively impact employee well-being and job satisfaction. To address this, the authors suggest several strategies that organizations can use to reduce these effects and foster a more positive work environment.
- Empower employees by giving them more control over their work environment, enabling them to manage and limit interruptions during critical tasks. For example, allowing employees to use “do not disturb” features during focused work periods can help minimize unnecessary disruptions.
- Offer training in stress management and coping techniques. This can help employees recover more effectively from interruptions, reducing the negative impact of frequent disruptions.
- Encourage employees to craft their jobs so that relatively routine tasks are integrated into the schedule on more challenging days. This approach allows the less interesting parts of a job to serve as a sort of respite, while allowing employees to maintain productivity and avoid unnecessary stress.
